An account of the early days of the History Group, written by Katie Carr-Tansley
The History Group was formed in the Spring of 2010 as a result of an event held in Benhall Church which had produced a vast number of photos and memorabilia and shown a need to create a History Group to collate and archive the material. The aim of this would be to record and maintain the historical information of the 2 villages, allowing schools, history groups and individuals to research their family and village life.
We have purchased 2 recording machines to enable us to talk to village residents and record their stories, which gives us a good picture of how village life used to be and have also gathered a great deal of pictorial and written information.
In the years since we were formed we have held several Village walks led by our village historian giving a narrative of interesting facts and followed by a convivial lunch. All were well attended. In March this year we held a tea party for older residents and for some who had spent their younger days in the villages and moved to foreign parts such as Saxmundham, Kelsale or Leiston. This was a great success and there have been many requests to repeat it.
We also produced a 2012 Calendar entitled Past and Present featuring village scenes and are now exploring the possibility of village postcards.
On 24th November 2012 we held an Autumn Fair and Coffee Morning exhibiting photographs of events in the villages in 2012,which were numerous, and are of course history. There were also a number of local skills on display including, amongst others, bread making, pottery, paintings, knitted goods, natural beauty products and jewellery. We have not applied for major grants but have received generous donations from the Flower Show committee. Apart from this we have raised funds from a small charge for the walks and the coffee morning and sale of calendars. We have been able to give donations to the “Go with the Flow” bus and Pre- school.
