Benhall & Sternfield Memorial Show
Benhall & Sternfield’s Show committee recently met to continue plans for the 11th August and are delighted to announce that Mr Frank Clarke and Steve Langford will be joining us to open the Show. We have a historic theme planned for this year’s Show to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One. Mr Clarke is a military veteran who served in India and Mr Langford is currently serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. We’re looking forward to hearing more about their experiences!
The Show wouldn’t be complete without the children’s fancy dress competition and we’ve decided to run this with a historic theme too so entrants in theme will be awarded extra points. Same for the scarecrow competition, so get your thinking caps on! If the weather is kind this year maybe they could be placed in gardens in the lead up to the Show to bring a smile to us all?!
A new procession will be trialled this year so children in fancy dress should meet at the playing field at 12:50 rather than on the green.
The schedule of marquee and dog show classes is out now, further details are available on this website, on the Benhall and Sternfield Show Facebook page and on Twitter @BenhallShow. There have been a few changes in the marquee. No need to change the Vegetable Classes - we just want a good growing season. Much the same goes for the Flowers - last year rain spoiled many blooms. Flowers Classes have been changed to include just one Pot Plant and an addition, Herb Garden in a Pot. Entries were very low in the Floral Arrangements - disappointing for the judge! This year the theme for Arrangement of Flowers and Foliage with Accessories is: The Centenary of Peace in 1918.
Under Baking and Preserves, there are some new Classes, such as Chocolate Muffins, Plain Meringues, Miniature Bakewell Tarts and, replacing Suffolk Rusks, “Suffolk Buns”. These delicacies have been tried, tested and approved at a Village Coffee Morning and there will be a recipe, if you haven't got one already, in the next Parish News.
In the Arts and Crafts Section there is to be a separate Class for Crochet, and the theme for the Photograph can be either Sunrise or Sunset.
In the Children’s Classes, this year there’s a chance to try making a model from re-cycled material as well as all the usual options. There were some great models last year!
A reminder that the show operates a ‘Friends’ scheme; in exchange for a donation you will receive a free programme and anyone that joins prior to the end of June will see their name in print as a gesture of our appreciation. Please contact Sarah Slade at firstname.lastname@example.org or 07977 223062 for further details or use our JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/benhallshow
As plans become clearer, what is also apparent is our need for extra help on the day. If you’re able to spare an hour or so to run the coconut shy, help on the bottle stall or clear away after the show then we’d love to hear from you. As well as supporting a worthy cause, it’s great for meeting others and volunteering gives a real boost to your wellbeing! Please contact Sarah as above or Mel at email@example.com or 07791 412163.
